Read a story just the other day about four guys, a plane, and a death wish... Two old boys were carrying two new 500 Smith & Wesson and wanted to kill a brown bear that was on a kill. After the bear charged them fourteen shots where fired. Both 500 were emptied and the guy with the 45-70 put two in the bear to keep the two pistol packers from going to Treadwell heaven.
Read another story about a guide who brought two Japanese fellows over to do some moose hunting. He had warned the two about a sow that frequented the camp, but up till now had done no harm and if they would just make some noise the sow would go away running. One night one of the Japanese fellows herd the bear out in front of the tent. He grabbed his flash light and a pistol, I think it was a 45 ACP, but I can’t remember, needles to say he went to the tent and opened the flap. He was face to face with the sow brownie and out of reflex he fired a shot at almost point blank range in the bears face. The bear was mortally wounded and would have die from the injuries, but after almost five minuets of interior decorating, the bear had killed the shooter and seriously wounded the other Japanese man. The bear did finally die after the guide put two large bore rifle slugs into the spine of the bear.
In Outdoor Life a story appeared some ten or so years ago about the Park Service barrel trapping a sow grizzly and a cub dumpster diving. The barrel trap was loaded in the back of truck and the bears were hauled into the back country. As one of the officers opened the slide gate on the back of the truck, the bears come out and the sow turned around and grabbed the top of the trap pulling the barrel trap and the Park ranger to the ground. The bear attacked and the park ranger put six .357 rounds into the bears head. The bear died, but not before rearranging the mans scalp and breaking his leg. The park service did have enough time to take some fantastic photos. Great pictures in Outdoor Life. Park Service must have the same ethics as the media, “better to report the news than to get involved.”
My feeling is that unless you are in the jaws of death, a pistol of any caliber is going to do little to save your life in time and may do more harm than good, however a pistol is far better than a rock or a stick....
