Kashwitna Brown Bears
Posted by Triple H on Jan 19 2006
I have been a regular reader of the forum and just appreciate listening to most of the discussions.  I have never posted before but felt this topic deserved an honest reply.
AK375HH - I'm not really sure the best way to find them, but there are brown bears everywhere by the Kashwitna.  We counted 13 different brownies at our bait stands last year and saw only 3 black bears, so I would love to see a more favorable black/brown ratio.  It's a Catch 22: there are tons of browns to hunt, but the reason there is so many is because the area is so thick and hard to hunt.  The only way to really hunt them is to get up on the hills above the rivers in the fall.  Other than that, in the spring one could just walk up either of the drainages hoping for a chance encounter - there are bear highways on both sides loaded with fresh scat.  Some might call this a challenge, others would probably refer to it as foolish.  I guess it depends on how bad you want it.  So I encourage your adventure and only ask that you use your best judgement within the trail system behind the gate.  I'm not sure exactly who you are, but you must be trustworthy if you have a key and feel free to PM me more on this subject.
As far as the trash talkers go, I am part of the family who owns the land behind the gate, which by the way is very much legal.  Our family and extended circle of friends consists of hundereds of people, old and young, who use the land respectfully year round and enjoy all that it has to offer.  Anybody that has honestly come to us in a friendly manner and agreed to abide by simple rules has been given permission to use the land.  On the other side of things, there are people who sneak on to the land and misuse it or mistreat the people who own it and then berate our family for telling them to leave, even though it is our legal right.  Some of you obviously fit in to this category.  If you want to use the land, instead of resorting to some of the tactics I have witnessed on this forum, why not do something worthwile and help contribute to the enormous property tax bill on 2,000+ acres or the costs it took to develop the trails or repair the gate every time somebody tears it down.  The sad part is that if these costs get too high or criminal confrontations ensue, then this land may be developed into hundreds of lots, which would eradicate most of the ATV trails, sacred fishing holes and hunting grounds.  Anyways, if you would like to degrade my family more, feel free to PM me and leave the forum to more beneficial discussions.  I'm sure Grandpa would have wanted it that way.
Best of luck AK375HH and to everyone else who goes after brown bear this year.
