difference

I gotta dissagree with Michael on one point, there's a big difference between guns that are specifically for bear hunting and those appropriate for other activities. If you're bear hunting, you want something that's going to deliver oomph down range. You're probably going to have time for 2 or three shots anyway and the bear probably doesn't have a clue where you are.

On the occassion of an actual charge, it's probably going to be in close quarters and the bear is going to probably be more aware of you than you are of it. So fast is the key in which case a pistol in a shoulder holster would probably get into play faster than a rifle slung over your shoulder. And if the rifle has a scope it's next to useless at ranges of 25 yards or less, especially if it's raining.
And if for some reason you already knew the bear was in the area before it was aware of you, you should have left the area. I'm with Pid on this one, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of "cure".

But I have another question. AK375HH was saying he was looking for protection while riding his 4-wheeler I believe. When was the last time you heard of somebody being attacked while riding a 4-wheeler?
