report on this stuff
Posted by ursus1 on Jan 19 2006
I'm going from memory here, but Tom Smith, the bear guy with USGS in Anchorage, tracks bear encounters throughout North America, and he has compiled statistics of what was used and how effective.  Here's where the memory part comes in, if I remember right, guns were effective in stopping the bear attack in like 45 - 55% of occasions.  He then broke down and pistols were like 45%, shotguns were like 50% and rifles were like 55%.  Its a pretty good report if you can get ahold of it.  After reading it, you might feel better about your choice, or you might not (maybe you don't like the other 50% where it wasn't effective?).
