Let's say you climbed all day to make a kill. You've done the chores and are loading up to head back to the beach. You're tired, your pack weighs a ton, and off you go into the forest and brush, smelling of fresh meat. You others may envision yourselves with shotguns, or you can believe that you could react to a bear and get an accurate rifle shot off. Me? I won't have a shotgun, and if I was to stand up quickly to shoulder a rifle, I'd probably fall over backwards. At this point of the day my rifle's probably lashed to my pack, anyway. So, my best options are a pistol or pepper spray.

In that scenario I choose a pistol. Especially since the rifle is probably a .270 with 4x minimum scope power. I couldn't accurately hit a bear up-close and in a hurry with that gun in those conditions. A 44 in a chest holster, my chances get better. That's my mental image of this topic. Still, I'd prefer to avoid a confrontation, and make every attemp to do so. If you hear some guy coming down the mountain, sounding like a herd of elephants and signing badly but loudly...it may be me. Believe me, I won't sneak up on you.
