Isn't that what you're talking about here?  You don't need anything unless you're charged.  At that point is there any handgun that will stop the bear other than with a well placed head shot?

It seems to me that pepper spray might stop a charging bear better than any handgun.

Personally, if I were going into an are where I were really worried about bears, meaning using caution and awareness isn't enough, I would carry a shotgun or a rifle with enough stopping power.
