Whatever you shoot- handgun, shotgun or rifle- the most important issue is hitting where you need to hit, no matter how big the hole or massive the energy.

That's the biggest tradeoff you face in leaning toward the convenience of a handgun.  They require more practice and skill to master.  You simply have to spend the money to learn how to shoot them well.  

If I'm really worried about bears in a location I stay home or carry a shotgun.  If they are less of a concern but I want to carry something that won't be in the way, I carry a handgun.  But even at my fairly high skill level, I recognize their limitations and wouldn't pick one as a primary defense weapon.
