Meat Costs
Posted by Michael Strahan on Jan 18 2006
MT,

I just ran some fresh numbers out for a seminar I'm teaching and came up with a range from $11.60 to $33.44, depending on what degree of commercial services are used.  These numbers are for 500 lbs. of moose meat taken by a non-resident hunter.  Of course not all non-resident hunters take ALL the meat home (lots of it is donated to others), so these numbers would theoretically go up if you only focused on the guy who shot the animal.

The only way I know of to get game meat for free with any consistency is to guide a hunter who gives you the meat.  If you've done your math correctly, you should be able to offset all the costs with income and come out ahead.  Lots of guides rely on this formula for winter meat supplies.  I remember a few years back I was at the dinner table with my family and my daughter said, "Daddy, this meat tastes funny."  I said, "Honey, that's beef."  We all got a laugh out of that one, because we realized she'd never tasted beef before.  We ate a lot of wild game back then, but not as much now.  She likes McDonald's hamburgers as well as other teenagers now, I suppose.

Clearly these numbers reflect the fact that most folks are not in this strictly for the meat; it's about the experience itself or other related factors.  Most of the guys I know who try to do this because it's such a good deal either live in a cabin in the woods, or are just kidding themselves.
