bear meat
Posted by Sollybug on Jan 18 2006
J.:
Sounds like there are some concerns about coastal bear meat. I can tell you that I hunted them in PWS in the Spring and it’s a hoot. You can get out early and there are a lot of bears and the scenery is spectacular. Use the .338 as shots are long and you need A RANGEFINDER, mine was in my tent. (capitals are due to my anger at misjudging my shot by 100 yards and missing clean. I judged 300 and the actual was 407.) That said, I hunt bears on berries in the fall and they make some spectacular roasts, steaks, and spicy breakfast sausage. A native guy told me “we eat rotten fish but we wont touch bear meat.” I say they have never had bear breakfast sausage. If you want to eat black bear hunt in the Fall on berries and they will be great! Hunt in the Spring for a great time.
