Beef vrs. Game
Posted by Mark on Jan 17 2006
I was in Mat-Valley Meats last summer, and noticed that a half beef was a bit over $800, cut and wrapped.
I figured that to mean that a moose is worth about $1600, cut a wrapped.
Even on trips that ran expensive, I've paid less than that (except one deer hunt to Kodiak). That's usually because at least one other man goes in on the expenses.
This past fall I got a caribou on a weekend hunt off the Denali Hwy. The only real expense was fuel. Figure a hundred bucks, divided by two men.
I got a half a moose on a hunt in the Placer River Drainage (friend had the permit). The friend lives in Girdwood. We stayed at his house and ran Twentymile and Placer River in my inflatable on the first weekend, which didn't do well at all (underpowered). The next weekend we rented a jonboat with Honda 4-stroke jet from MWR on Ft. Rich. Three day rental costed $180. Got the moose on Friday morning, and were back sucking beers at the friend's house in Girdwood by 3 PM. Cut meat on Saturday, then ran the boat back up the Placer on Sunday hoping to catch a bear on the gutpile. Too late; he'd buried everything and was nowhere in sight.
I'll be baiting bears this spring near Willow. Again, pretty much just fuel for two or three weekends.
I don't calculate the costs of gear/vehicles in the overall cost of the meat. Why? Because they're durable products. I buy used machines, use them for a few years, then sell them and buy a newer machine. Depreciation loss is low.
Also, I use my vehicles for activities other than hunting, so the cost is distributed there, as well.
I also raise some of our own meat. Usually we will raise turkeys for the holiday season, we raise and butcher an occasional lamb, and we like to raise a batch of meat chickens during the summer.
For me, hunting costs are very competitive with the purchase cost of meat.
