costs and hidden costs
Posted by bushrat on Jan 17 2006
Last night was moose meat, tonight will be moose meat, and tomorrow night will be moose meat. We vary betweeen moose and rice, moose and spuds, moose and noodles...and on and on until we run out of meat in spring. Cost more to buy and ship wheat and flour and rice and noodles out here than it does to get moose from along the river.

There are hidden costs to shopping at the grocery store beyond the tab you pay when you check out. The cost of a confined-animal-feeding-operation is high in terms of cruelty, as well as the costs (to your health) of meat laced with hormones and antibiotics. We hunters often do end up paying a high monetary cost for game meat, and I've always wondered why we don't support the higher cost of organic farming/ranching of animals instead of corporate CAFOs who can sell beef and pork and chicken to the masses so cheaply. Seems like if we're willing to pay so much for our game meat in a lot of cases, we'd be willing to pay a higher cost for organic meat that was raised humanely, as well as organic cereals that didn't foul the earth with pesticides. Just imagine if hunters were at the forefront of promoting such ideals....
