per pound
Posted by twodux on Jan 17 2006
Let's see, 3 big bucks and a spike, I'm sure they averaged at least 50 lbs of boned out meat each. so at least 200lbs of meat. My share of the gas was right around $200. 5 bullets for 4 deer, $.75 each, so another $3.75 plus another 15 bullets zeroing in at the range. so another $11.25. New scope was $250, but I'll depreciate that over 10 years, so that's $25. Had the gun over 10 years so it's paid for it's self. I use the boat for commercial fishing, so I'd have it whether hunting or not, no cost there. All other gear is stuff I'd have anyway, except wrapping paper, I'll call that $10. So total, $250 for 200 lbs of prime, no hormones or dye added meat. I guess that is about $1.25 per pound.

I guess I'd have to subtract the cost of the 15 lbs. I lost during deer hunting. What would that cost me at a spa? Oh and maybe I can subtract the cost of a mental health professional, cuz hunting cleans my brain.

Now my grouse this year probably cost a little more. Probably spent $25 in gas driving out the road, Maybe $3.00 for shells for 8 grouse. At a generous 1 lb of meat per bird,(I breast them, but save the legs and giblets too) That's 8 lbs of protein at a cost of $28. That would be about $3.50 per pound. But like someone up above mentioned, the time I spent outdoors with my 3 1/2 year old son was priceless. (You should have seen the look on his face when we drove around a corner to come face to face with three black bears!) He caught his first cutthroat on a grouse hunt this year and we found a new nagoonberry patch while we were grouse hunting. So how do you measure all that?
