I hear ya on the shotgun thing; We did the same thing when we hunted pheasants or ducks.  But there's a huge difference between a loaded shotgun sitting in the corner of a duck blind or a shotgun carried across a cornfield at port arms, from arm-wrestling your way through three miles of alders with a loaded rifle in your hands.  With pheasants, we routinely broke our shotguns open (double barrel of course) for the walk to, from, and between fields as a matter of safety.  Did the same thing on the way to and from the duck blind, now that I think about it.

Lots of people do things differently, but this is what we did, and nobody ever got shot.  We never even had an accidental discharge that I can recall.
