gun safety
Posted by twodux on Jan 14 2006
After reading all the posts, there are some strong feelings and some very good points.

I personally never chamber a round when I'm hiking in with another person. Once we split up it's a different story. The type of hunting I do I'm usually going to get a shot in a close situation. Now it doesn't take that long to jack a shell in, but I don't like the noise. It's much more quiet to slip my safety off. I have a ruger m77 with the three position safety and when it's locked, it's locked. I still always keep the barrell pointed in a safe position. Another thing I do that isn't mentioned here is no matter what, I always assume your weapon has a bullet in the chamber whether it does or not. And believe me, if you point your gun at me whether it has a bullet in the chamber or not, you're going to hear about it. I do unload when I'm doing anything where I have a risk of falling or tripping or dropping my gun or if I join back up with my partner. I also unchamber when I'm packing out. But in a hunting situation (I'm usually still hunting) I am chambered and locked
