this reminds me a lot of that last thread about meat vs antlers and everyone swore they only hunted for meat....
i've usually treated hunting as just that. an activity steeped in responsibilty that includes muzzle awareness and safety whether walking up birds, sitting in a stand, or stalking along spurs of a mountain. i unload when i'm done hunting. if you don't need your gun loaded, then it shouldn't be. some folks and some state laws are more strict than this, nothing wrong with individual choice.
as a side note, here in iraq, we lock and load every time we drive off the forward operating base. just as unsafe, but i wouldn't change it. before anyone blasts me, of course i know this isn't hunting and no one is shooting back in the tundra, but the safety point remains with well over 100,000 of us every year here banging around with loaded weapons "on safe until ready to fire" since mar '03.
