Ideas vs people
Posted by Webmaster on Jan 13 2006
This has been a useful discussion, but as has been pointed out, it has degenerated into name calling.
I'd like to suggest an approach that will produce less heat and more useful conversations.
It is usually not feasible in the context of these kinds of discussions to really understand the people with whom we are communicating. The words that are written only incompletely describe what is going on between the ears of the writer.
The idea expressed may be ridiculous, but that doesn't mean the person is ridiculous or an idiot. The person may be bright and thoughtful, but may come out with a stupid idea.
No less a luminary than Winston Churchill came up with the idea of floating thousands of explosive mines down the Rhine River during WWII to make life difficult in the Third Reich. Brilliant guy; not so clever an idea, his military strategists pointed out. He had many great ideas, and some really dumb ones, too.
In the same way, we've all got ideas to contribute here. If the idea less than useful -- or even dumb -- let's say so. There is a year round open season here on ideas, with no bag limit.
But the season is closed on people, so save your bullets for the ideas.
From the forum rules < http://www.outdoorsdirectory.com/forum_faq.htm#rules >
3) Treat others as you would have them treat you. Netspeak: no flames. Comment on outdoor related ideas is welcome; comment on people is not.
