Depends on what you want to kill!
Posted by jklingel on Jan 13 2006
DON'T READ THIS IF YOU CAN NOT TAKE CRITICISM, 'CAUSE A FEW OF YOU ARE GOING TO GET IT. If you want to kill your hunting buddy, sure, put a round in the chamber all day long. Oh, and fear not about the safery; leave it "good to go". You never know when that ever-necessary and I-gotta-have-it wild animal will jump up in front of you. God forbid that you should "let one escape" for another time/place/hunter. After all, what are we out there for? To come home alive, or MAYBE kill one wild animal? Shucks, we are out there to kill, so keep a round in the chamber and kill whatever the barrel is pointed at when it goes off. Please, spare me the "I've never had the safety accidentally bumped off." Right. Never been trough thick brush or dropped a gun in your life, huh? Having been in a bear stand and had my 'buddy' come up after me (round in chamber, as he insisted), taken his gun, which was pointed at me half the time he was climbing, to see the safety was OFF.... "no thanks" to you guys who carry a live one. Stay away from me, please. Having nearly been shot by my brother while we were crawling through a barbed wire fence (kids, loaded shotguns)... "no thanks" to you guys who carry a live one. Having shot my dad when I was a puppy.... "no thanks" to you guys who carry a live one. A couple years ago a sales guy at Compeau's was showing me Craig's used boat he had for sale. When I inquired about the Aluminox patch, he said that a buddy, against Craig's wishes, carried a live one... till he shot a hole in Craig's boat while seated next to him. (I never verified the story with Compeau; call yourself if you'd like.) It is a RARE and SHORT-LIVED time that it is appropriate to carry a live round. Master Guide Joe Want told me that he NEVER does, or lets clients, and he has not yet seen a situation where he felt he needed to have a live one ready. Do you assume he has been in bear country more than you have? Fair assumption. Sure. You read about the RARE time when someone was attacked by Mr Big; but far more often you read about "The Accidental Shooting of..." Give it up, guys. There are at least two ways to carry a gun with the "safe" and yet it can be loaded in a heart-beat (Chamber empty, firing pin down, bolt closed. Grab the bolt, load, and fire. Simple. Fast). Sorry to jump on The Carriers, but I've been on the wrong end and find myself and my partner far more valuable than that MAYBE shot at some wayward bag of amino acids that I will shoot later anyway. It is a probability thing. (Mike: By myself, carrying meat, in thick brush, sure, I load up, too. I ain't stupid.)
