trophy fees
Posted by Mr. Pid on Jan 12 2006
While arguing wasn't my intention, and this topic is getting tiresome, I'll respond once more.

Last year I drew a Raspberry/Afognak/Shuyak brown bear permit. After I considered all of the expenses, including specific gear, transportation, taxidermy, and land-use fees, I chose not to hunt. I didn't see a benefit that justified the investment. This past summer, I wondered around those same islands, with a use permit, with a fly rod in my hand. It was worth every penny. I certainly could have fished elsewhere for free, but I paid my money and appreciated spending my time in what may be the most beautiful place I know. I didn't pay for fish. I paid for the priveledge of picking my way through private forests to find a spot that I liked, to catch a fish that belongs to all of us.

If I was to have invite you to my house, or you were to invite me to yours, we would be expected to abide by the rules of the house, even if we didn't necessarily agree with those respective rules. If doing so was too big a burden, we would have the freedom to leave, and in the future, not show up at all. No amount of whining on the internet will change the way you structure the rules in your house, right? Your house, your rules, your choice. That is one of the basic freedoms that Americans defend. Unless, apparently, it's somebody else's house.
