The only reason I know is that I found a rifle in a river that was mostly rotted away. It had a Leupold vari X II 1-4 on it. The lenses were sand blasted from being in the river. I sent it in to Leupold since they have an unconditional lifetime warranty. They replaced the lenses and fully refurbished the scope for $80 including shipping and I had it back 2 weeks after sending it in. I later sold the scope for $250!

The other time I needed them was when my Gold Ring 10x42's got left below the high tide line overnight(a long story). The brass corroded and froze the focusing knob. They completely stripped and refurb.'d them and had them back to me in 10 days at no charge!! I was fully expecting to pay for it since it was by no means covered by warranty but they really stand behind their stuff!
