Nikon vs Leupold
Posted by AlaskaCub on Jan 11 2006
What model Nikon were you shooting? I own 3 Monarchs, (2) 3X9x40 (1) 3.5 X10X50 and 2 Buckmasters. I have never had any problems with any of them the oldest being 8 years old. They have survived drenched beat up sheep hunts, moose hunts, caribou hunts at -40 degrees you name it. I have a friend that recently replaced his Leupold VX-II with a monarch after looking through my Nikon in Low light conditions at the shooting range,he could not believe the clarity and light gathering abilities of the Nikon. It was pretty easy as we sold his Leupold on Ebay and replaced it with a nikon Monarch for $20 more I also have a pair of the Monarch 10X42 binos and this past fall while hunting my partner had a pair of the Leupold Wind River Cascade binos also in 10X42 and once again if you compared the two side by side the Nikons were clearer and this was his discovery not mine when he couldn't see what I was seeing and we switched binos and then I looked through his for the first time. The same guy also has the Leupold Wind River Sequoia spotting scope and he will ademently tell you that my Nikon Spotter is clearer than his Leupold. Now dont get me wrong I know Leupold makes good glass I just think that you have to pay a lot more and buy their higher end scopes, binos, and spotting scopes . But I am not impressed with any of their intermediate price optics compared to Nikon for less money. For less you can get a Nikon Monarch and the glass is clearly better. If you dont believe me take a look at both side by side if you can and I dont mean in a well lit department store or at high noon with the sun shining outside, try it in more realistic outdoor environments say a half hour or so before dusk on an overcast day.Just my .02 I am not cheap and I dont shop for super bargains but I have owned both and  my eyes dont lie to me. The only really good thing I can say about Leupold is their resale value is higher but I believe mainly because  people buy something with a big name and dont have a clue that there are other options! Also my snide remark about the Customer service department issue was because I keep hearing about the Leupold customer service , who the heck needs a customer service department with a rifle scope its not a truck that needs regular servicing unless factory defects are common and they are good about repairing them?
