private property
Posted by twodux on Jan 11 2006
You always hear people here in Alaska complaining that more land should be put into private ownership. But I dissagree. I'm glad I live in the state with the most public land in the union. Private land is the biggest land lock-up there is. Just imagine if the Pt Mackenzie bridge is completed and the land out there developed. Not only will there be less places to hunt, but there will be more people crowding what public access there is.

That being said, where private land is held, you must respect the property owner's wishes. I don't even begrudge the Native Corporations from charging an access fee on their land, at the least they need money to patrol the area and clean up messes left behind by thoughtless users. I do have a problem with them charging you on an escalating fee depending on what species you are hunting. I think they should have one fee. They own the land, not the animals. I'm surprised that no one has challenged this yet. Now if they want to require you to hunt with a tribal guide and make you pay him for guiding services, I couldn't argue with that, but again, the animals are a public resource and as such they shouldn't be able to charge you by the animal. A bear hunter has no more impact on their property than a deer hunter or a hare hunter.
