Assuming that you're talking about Leupold, so that we're comparing appples to apples, the Vari X I and II are 3-9 while the Vari X III is the 2.5-8. The differnece isn't so much in the magnification as it is the lens coatings.  You won't see a difference in the magnification but you'll see a huge difference with the higher quality lenses and coatings in the more expensive Vari X III.
