I would suggest a Winchester bolt action single shoot .22 with iron sights (because every farmer/rancher I know/knew had one), I would forget the scope.  If not a .22, then I would use a lever action 30-30 or a Winchester Mod 70 in 30-06 with iron sights, again forget the scope.  I can tell you as a kid growing up on a farm, it is hard to hit birds flying with a rifle.
