Meindls, break ins, and socks, and more failures..
Posted by TradBow on Sep 02 2005
First and foremost it still sounds like 1 the boots just plum dont fit or two you are tightening the laces to much, I leave mine pretty loose.
Break in should be almost non existent. I do have to say I spend most of my time in boots up till recently so my feet do well in almost all boots (minus hippers for any length of time due to the lack of support for the bottom of your feet).
I also went to using superfeet. The insoles that came with the cabela's meindls went promptly into the trash the first time. This second time I saved them in case I have to send these back. For socks I am wearing the red or blue/green smartwools, I believe its the hiker and expedition weights can never remember. If it were me and I was adiment about wearing the boots you have, I'd make these changes, first the sole, then the socks and see where you come out at. I'll really dont believe the leather on these boots is going to "form fit" like other boots during a normal break in period due to the hard rubber surrounding the lower half.
I went through the waterproofing riga-more-al before I left on this last hunt. I have to say it did ok till the rubber itself started lifting in another area on the same boot. I didn't get home in time to get to call someone at cabela's as I need prompt service on this. Have a week long moose hunt next week then I am back out to finish the sheep season and I need these boots or similars.
If it were me and I had time, I'd send them back and get the Canadians. I have friends that have these and all of them lovem. They are stiff and these DO need some break in time however atleast for me that doesnt take much.
I am looking at asking for my money back on these and buying the higher grade of AK Hunter Meindls. It truely is a great design but so far the cabela's brand is just not cutting the mustard in the sheep mountians! I have to say, I hunt slow and I love to get into sheep mountains but even at my pace these boots are dying rapidly much like the first pair!!!
