Caribou Shed in Chugach
Posted by kaboku68 on Aug 30 2005
It is not suprising. There is a herd of approxiamately 300 animals that live less than 50 miles from Valdez in mountains above Tonsina Lake. These same mt. Caribou range westward.

Robert Tobey who is just retiring out of Glennallen has commented that they have been a residual herd from the very old Willow Creek herd that died out in the early 1960's.

The herd bulls of this group are big. They are very much like the mountain caribou that used to range in the Mentasta Mts. Big bodies and big horns.
