.22 for birds
Posted by Kirk on Aug 30 2005
Being this is an Alaskan forum, I'm sure many Ptarmigan are taken each year with a .22.    I'd be cautious writing about hunting ducks with a .22 since Federal Law prohibits it, (not saying many ducks haven't been taken with a .22 - it's just not talked about).   A .22 rimfire is legal in most states for small game (including upland game) and in the 60's was probably pretty common.  I know in Minnesota up until a generation ago most farmkids carried a .22 with them everywhere and many, many pheasants were taken.  I sure did, I had a Winchester 94.

I think I'd leave the scope off.   Very few .22 rifles had them in the '60's and for flying birds I sure wouldn't want one anyway.

For old bolt actions, I think of Stevens or Savage, I've also got one of them for rough use.   By the 60's a lot of .22's were semi-autos.   If I were to pick one for shooting flying birds it would be a semi-auto without a scope.   A .22 bullet moves about the same as a shotgun, so a lead would be similar.  I think most shots would be snap shots though.
