Two Spares Minimum
Posted by Kay9Cop on Aug 29 2005
I went up a couple weeks back and ended up with three flats, one ready to go flat, and a damaged rim.  I was running brand new (less than 1k miles) mud terrain tires and the tread was too open.  It allowed rocks to get in between the tread blocks and puncture the carcass.  In my opinion, all terrain type tires will do best and I second the "e" rating recommendation.  I would definitely recommend at least two full size spares, four cans of fix-a-flat, a tire plug kit, and an electric compressor.

Tires were actually reasonably priced in Deadhorse and I was able to get Ford Superduty rims from their shop since most of the North Slope vehicles are Fords.  The guy running the shop was very friendly and changed the tires in a couple of hours.  I forget his name, but he was from Montana and had hunted before so we had something to talk about.

I noticed a towing fee chart on the wall of the tire shop.  Minimum towing fee for outside Deadhorse was one hour of labor at $75/hour plus actual labor and mileage fee.  It went up as high at five hours of labor minimum depending on how far out you were.  Unfortunately, unless you have a sat phone you'll be hitching a ride into Deadhorse to get that tow.

Now, hunting partner did the trip two years ago with marginal tires and no extra tire repair supplies at all and made it out just fine.  I suppose it's like caribou hunting; sometimes they're every where and other times you can't see them for miles.
