my thoughts

David,

I've been gone for a couple weeks and wanted to give the board a once-over, and it highlighted many of the things I don't like about the setup, particularly A: new posts don't rise to the top. I'd like to see that happen. You have some posts down there I just don't see even though they have recently been added to. The con of old news being recycled is probably something to consider, and like anything there is no one perfect answer and some threads will get old as they keep getting pushed to the top. Right now, it's sometimes a pain to see who has replied to what part of a thread, which brings me to J: I don't like the current setup where some replies are simply shown as black squares and dots. I'd like to just be able to read a thread in chronological order and see all posts listed by name and title. So your idea, I: place a vertical toolbar with thread contents may be a good one.

B: I've always asked for an editing function, which is common on other boards. Definitely it should list that this post was edited at such-and-such a time by the member. I'm just a stickler for good grammar and spelling, and sometimes I write too fast, then see a stupid mistake that I can't fix. Others may use it to change the context of what they wrote. A spell-checker function of some kind would be helpful I think for many, so any offline editor would be good.

C: Delete function---don't see a need for it. With editing, one can simply wipe all text from a post anyway, so why add delete?

F: Emoticons---they are silly and valley-girlish and I've never liked them. There are no emoticons in the dictionary! We can use <grin> to imply we are joking, or the more common "emoticons" people use now with semicolons and parentheses.

E: Bold and Italics---would be helpful at times to stress a point. I've used caps in the past as such, but don't much care for doing that.

D: Add Image---that's a real tough one as I imagine you will have a lot of people pushing for this. Let's face it, sometimes a pic can really be worth a thousand words, and I can see a place for it SOMETIMES, but for the most part all images do is encourage people to post post-hunt posing shots that bog down anyone trying to read that thread. Takes up an amazing amount of space, as you know. I've never understood how some can pay for that amount of storage on a server, and many folks aren't familiar with how to resize a picture to an acceptable size and end up posting 500k (or larger) pics. Best thing, imo, is if someone really wants to post a pic, why don't they just post it on their own webspace and give a url link that shows picture in the thread, or just a url link. Yes, pics are great for those with dsl and cable but the folks on dialup will simply bog down loading the page.

H: emailing when replies are posted---no thanks! The cons you listed for that are very real.

L: fwd to a friend function---that would be nice at times for some folks.

G: current colors---don't care what color the site is, as long as I can read the threads

K: resume---would be nice for those that want to be able to have a small space for resume/background/web address.

Mainly, my biggest beef is I want to see most recent posts at top and would really like it if I could choose to have an ENTIRE thread show up in chronological order on one page without having to click on each reply and bring up a separate page each time, then click back etc. So good luck with whatever changes you decide to go with!
Best, Mark
