Floating the Sag
Posted by Dangus42 on Jul 31 2005
We did it last year; it can be done but you won't get outside 5 miles.  The best we got was approx 2 miles from the road, then we hiked in from there.  About 10 miles down from Pump Station #2 there is an access road that runs to the Sag.  We put in a 12 ft Zodiak with the intent of going down 5 miles where the river moves away from the road.  It wasn't easy with just paddles but we did it; just make sure you are taking every right slough you can find.  Took out exactly where we wanted to; the pipeline is buried at that point and you will see some markers.  Afterwards, we put back in with the intent of taking out at Punp Station #2.  Again, make sure you take every left slough going down.  We did have to do some dragging the last mile, the slough going into Pump 2 was very low.  If you get into the main stem of the Sag (which you will have to do to get to either side on the float) be very careful.  It is very fast and paddles weren't much use (oars would have been much easier to help navigate).  We managed to do it but there were several times I thought we were not going to make it from one side to another when we saw a slough we wanted to take.
But here is the problem; every time we did the five miles in (which was just twice) we never saw any animals out there.  The 5 others who were bow hunting saw animals everyday along the road and pipeline.  My experience is that unless you know that there are animals out there already, or you're willing to set up a spike camp at the 5 mile mark and wait for animals, it is alot of work for very little (or no) gain.  That's why I took up bow hunting this year.  Good luck either way and be carefull.
