The walking is tough either way.  Don't limit yourself to one area the caribou wont and don't.  They are where they are.  

The raft idea is a sound one.  

Bring head nets, the bugs can be nasty still at that time of year.

GPS is a good thing if you are doing the 5mile or should the fog roll in on you.  We managed to find a pack for a pair of guys who got lost and ditched everything.  Two guys who are just lucky to be alive, no compass, no gps, nothing!  

Weather can be  70 and sunny to cold and snowing.  It is what it is, there are no rules up there and there is no rules when chasing caribou.  Go with an open mind, think outside the box and you'll do well.
