Sobot vs more lead...
Posted by Murphy on Jun 30 2005
John,

If I may step in here with stepping on toes, I will try to answer your question.  Momentum and penetration. The Sabot slug you described is designed flatten trajectory not flatted an animal.  For lighter framed game that don't bite back it will be ok but when up against larger heavier carnivorous types, it will not penetrate well. It is also meant to expand which will further limit penetration, not a good thing.  It is already 72 caliber why do we need expansion?  We don't, we need penetration.  You should use 1&1/4 ounce Breneke rifled slugs.  They are hardened not just soft lead pumpkin balls and actually are longer than their diameter, better sectional density, better penetration.  Also adding weight adds momentum which aides energy transfer and penetration.  You do not want the slug to expand and stop an the shoulder bones of something big and nasty.  It can annoy them.  Hope this helps, good shootin'.
