The coastal refuge... wow.  That brings back memories!  I haven't hunted there in probably fifteen years at least.

Back in the day, I think we only used a dozen decoys or less there.  It's mostly shots at birds moving through in the confusion.  I'd pick out all the drakes and just use hen decoys though.  Our fall season here is so early that the birds are still in eclipse plumage.  In other words, they all look like hens (well, the mallards and pintails do anyway.  So do the teal.)  You might pick up a duck call too.  Of course you'll need waders and full camo gear.  You can build a blind out of native materials.

I used to be a waterfowl addict many years ago and spoiled myself on the San Joaquin River delta in California and the refuges in Oregon.  Sad to say that the local duck hunting near Anchorage is a poor comparison, but it is.  Still, it's always a blast just to be out there watching the world wake up.
