At least you asked questions before you put your raft in the water.  If you knew Alaska waters, you wouldn't even consider anything like this.  I see rafts two miles off the beach in Ninilchik (Cook Inlet) and I think they are pushing the envelope.  It doesn't take a few minutes for the weather to turn and the water to get ugly.  One good wave and you would be on the Coast Guard blotter as a statistic.  The water you are talking about can get alot uglier than Cook Inlet, which I hope puts this issue to bed for you.  As they said in "Jaws":  "I think we need a bigger boat".  Be smart ... be safe.
