glassing- best magnification
Posted by CDN DUCKNUT on May 28 2005
Without turning this into another Brand 'X' vs. Brand 'Z' thread...

Based on your experiences and opinions, what is the best all around magnification for binoculars. I hunt mostly in Alberta foothills which is similar game and terrain as AK. I hope to hunt grizz, caribou and sheep in AK in the future. (might move there eventually so a guide will be unlikely).

Powerfull 10x42 or even 10x50? Lightweight 8x30? Howabout 8x42?

Assume we are comparing premium optics, and that a spotting scope is available in the backpack. What's the best all around binocs, good for everything from short to long range glassing- No tripod, just from a backpack or rock. I like to keep mine around my neck even when hiking and negotiating terrain. Only put them into the pack in extreme circumstances.

My goal is to get into something smaller and lighter than what i have now, Nikon 10x50s. Must admit I lean towards the 10x but would love to drop down to a smaller 8x30 or 8x42 if I thought I'd be happy with them.

Opinions?
