About access
Posted by Joe on May 28 2005
I was reflecting this morning as a buddy and I went down the ridge checking the trail conditions to the only access point to put a boat in the river. "Did you ever notice that a lot of the people that complain about ruining the wilderness by improving road access don't ever spend enough time in the woods to miss indoor plumbing?" Meanwhile, those of us that really need a shower after a hunting trip, go to extremes to find the wilderness because we can't always afford to pay for a guided fly in charter with all the comforts of home. When we can, it's a trip of a lifetime. Fortunately or unfortunately, State maintenance on most trails ends at the trail head. So, instead of having a decent road, and safe routes to our secret spots, we beat up our primary means of transportation on miles of rough trails and hope we make it there and back. We gain a sense of solitude by taking the road less traveled, but we lose the security of having a safe route to and from that special place. That, or the manufacturers are conspiring with the bankers to sell more toys at high interest rates.
Bring on the Sunshine, and have a safe, way too short, Alaskan summer.
Joe
