bear behavior
Posted by mr ed on May 27 2005
Not exactly a hunting question but I thought this forum might have the best opinions...
Drifted past what I'm sure was a bear the other day while floating Fish Creek. Never saw it but I heard it huffing and some light thrashing probably from maybe 50 yards away. I don't think it knew I was there when I first heard it but who knows. I carry a small piece of plastic tubing as a signal horn(works great!) and I gave it several loud blows to let the critter know I was coming. All was quite until we got parrallell to it when the huffing and thrashing commenced again in the weeds near the waters edge about 20 feet from us.
My question (since Mr Treadwell chose to so selfishly leave us and I can't consult with him ) if there's anyone out there who knows bears well enough, do they thrash in their sleep like my rottweiler does or was I very lucky and recieved a warning from a disgruntled bear? It sounded more like sleeping noises to me but who knows. Also, do bears in early spring tend to hang in one nest or do they tend to roam more.
Planning on floating the creek several more times this summer and like to be as ready as possible. Thanks for any opinions. - ed
