Rutting moose
Posted by AkHunter45 on May 25 2005
I've never hunted near McGrath but moose are moose and generally act the same and favor the same type of terrain throughout the state. They tend to stay in heavy cover during most of the day and feed at night and into the early morning, occasionally moving about during midday to find food or water. I have found that altitude doesn't have much to do with moose behavior, though they can be found up high during the warmer months to escape the bugs. When the rut nears bulls tend to become a little more receptive to calling and raking. I believe that where ever you find cows, bulls will not be to far away. When glassing for moose, i glass any area i think a moose might be hanging out, be it in the tree's, near a pond or lake or traveling along a river corridor. They can often be found in openings but cover will not be far away, they do like staying in the tree's. I would look for heavy pockets of timber near good food and water sources keeping a sharp eye out for that flash of antler as they move through the timber. I hope this helps.
