What does moose rutting habitat look like on a map
Posted by Elkarcher on May 25 2005
A short preamble: I'm planning a moose hunting trip in '07. I've planned dozens of hunting trips for deer and elk in AZ, WY and my home state of Colorado. I've read the ADF&G's harvest reports, moose management plans and several books and I've come up with a preliminary area to hunt. Now in order to tell an air taxi service where I'd like to be dropped I need to narrow it down a LOT more since most Alaskan GMUs are as big as most states. On a topo map of Colorado I could tell you where the best elk habitat would likely be by looking for access to water, altitude, vegitation, sun exposure and rutting habitat. However, I have no clue how to do the same for Moose in Alaska and the Wildlife officer I spoke with gave me a very vague reponse. Now perhaps my question was too vague so I'm going to try to ask a more specific question here. I've been reading the archives of this forum and I'm really impressed with the depth of knowledge expressed here. If I don't ask the question well, please forgive my ignorance. The question(s) is(are):

In September, between the 10th and the 20th, near McGrath, where will the mature bull moose tend to be found? In thick hard to reach timber? Out in openings looking for a girlfriend or a fight? Is altitude important? eg. Do they head up or down, or do they stay put?
