transporting firearms

I spoke with the AMHS last week about taking the ferry from Bellingham to Whittier. I was told that firearms can be kept locked inside the vehicle. I was further told that since I was going to Whittier that I would not have to worry about Canadian Customs. If someone knows different, let me know.
