I'm moving to alaska and need some info
Posted by jssbastiat on May 24 2005
Hi,

I'm scotty and moving to alaska in july...will be visiting in june...i will be teaching somewhere  near fairbanks, within 2 hours or so i hope...in these communities, are there cabins for rent so i can live in the woods?

also, i have a .357 pistol, but, i have seen a 275lb hog GET UP after 2 shots to the neck/head area, so i need a SURE thing when it comes to a pistol incase i get to close to a bear, adn i'm not worried about the black bears!  So, what is the minimum i want?

Also, will a nice 12 gauge 3 inch slug pushing 2000 ft per sec take down the caribou, moose, brown bear?..i know it will a 400lb hog/bear....

if i buy a rifle for brown bear, etc, what are some good calibers?  will my nickon 3x9 be enough scope...

Ok, for my first year there, if i choose something within 2 hours of fairbanks, will i have plenty of hunting on my 4 wheeler?

Is it necessary to have  a 4 wheel drive?...

thanks for any help?  OH, hey, are there coons there?  What kinda of dog do ya'll use to hunt them and tree 'em?  We use tree'ing walkers, will one of these dogs make it there?

thanks,
scotty
