big bears
Posted by Alasken on Mar 29 2005
I think that anywhere there are brown bears, there are bears 10' or better. Whether you see them or not is another story. Considering how a bear is measured, there isn't a lot of difference between 10'6" and 11'. I have to admit I have seen some 9' bears stretched out to be close to 10', but when you think about the measurements and how bears are built, a a bear that's a couple of inches taller when standing on all fours, that could make a big difference in the squared hide.

Last spring on the peninsula one of the guys I guided shot a 10'4" bear. The hide was laid out on a concrete slab after fleshing. With just a little tug here or there, that bear could have easily been over 10'6". While on that hunt we saw two bears that were bigger, one of them I would say was over 11'.

Are there 11 footers out there? Yep, but like cold zero said, his bear was over twenty years old. Bears are extremely intelligent. They learn fast and have a good memory. One year when I was hunting in nit 6, we had a big bear within 100 yards of our camp every night, but never saw him. By the size of the tracks he was in the 10' range. I've also seen a grizzly many years in a row that is over 10', but he spends a lot of time in the brush.

Some of those bears on the mentioned website are absolute pigs.
