Double Rifles
Posted by Murphy on Mar 29 2005
Packerzack,

The cheapest double I know of is a Merkel and they are about $10,000. Not Stainless, never seen one in stainless. But to have one made in Europe in stainless would cost more than the price of a new pickup. I have seen very few African PHs carry doubles, they are just too expensive. If a person really likes doubles and grew up with them, so to speak, they will be fast for the second shot, but for me I'll always take a good bolt with a third and a fourth shot and a little slower second. I carried a 470 double Merkel around all day in South Africa and I was ready to leave it in the sand by about noon. A lot of un-necessary weight. They are normally regulated at about sixty yards, but sometimes by manipulating the loads, I can re-regulate a good rifle.  I have loaded and fired the 470, 475 no.2, 476, 500 and 600 Nitro express. That last one was an old Purdy worth about $80,000.  Now that would be a bear stopper, 900 grain Barnes Original bullet at 1950 fps. It weighed 21 pounds, but as they say, in Africa, "light as a feather... when someone else is carrying it." This is fun! Good shootin'.
