African guide vs. Alaskan guide
Posted by Marc Stokeld on Mar 29 2005
THere are a couple of differences between the two guides. For one, a lot of people want to see an African PH use a DR, so it helps them look cool. Also, they often get much longer hunting seasons and higher priced hunts each year. THis translates into greater wages and tips.

As for relaibility, the DR has a weaker bolting and extraction system than the bolt action. It also is more prone to malfunctions when exposed to crud. THis applies to opening and closing the action, as well as getting shells in and out of the barrels.

The old theory was that you had two independent firing mechanisms, so if soemthing happened to one side, you still had the other side. This only applies to the lock mechanism, and it also means there is twice the chance soemthing will go wrong. Actually, a lot more than twice the chance, as a bolt action is a more basic and more reliable mechanism than the DR. Not that a DR can't be very reliable, just that for ultimate reliability, the bolt action would have to get the nod.
