early
Posted by muskeg on Mar 29 2005
any animals out yet?
While there no doubt will be a few Bear out, it is early for a good hunt. If you are just looking for A Bear it might work. But if you want to be selective and go for a jumbo there won't be many to choose from.

You can do a little research and find the cronology for the kill. Rarely, also for POW Island, are there early Bear taken, and not many. Many years the first tagged Bear is around the 20th of April.

Will there be lots of other hunters?
No

how do the bears act when they hear a skiff cursing by...?
They ususally are aware. Some run for the brush. You should spot from a distance and stalk.

The reason I don't schedule a hunt that early is that those early hunts can and are very weather related. And the numbers are not just out and if there were a few and the weather goes bad they seem to hole up, more than move. It is not true that all the early emergers are the big Boars like some people think. I think a lot of early emergers are younger Boars that don't have thier life pattern down yet and probably feel some urge (food or sex) coming on. I have killed large Boars past mid May at 1800 feet just out of den still asleep on thier feet. Bears just don't wake and run for the beach. It usually takes them a couple weeks to get down there, I would imagine.

It is cold, with mixed rain and snow today with the snow line down low on the mountain. We can have this type of weather on and off through April. Even mixed with some warm days.

I just got back from Hyder and the Bears over on the mainland won't be out for a bit yet. There is still 4 feet of snow at sealevel up the Canal.
