don't know how many guides use $12k rifles!!!
Posted by Marc Stokeld on Mar 27 2005
I thought Butch Searcy would make a SS rifle, but did not see it on his site. A DR will always have to be regulated by hand and it can never be done by machine and computers. It will always cost a lot to get that regualtion. Working with SS barrels will add to that cost. Synthetic stocks would be cheaper than wood, but would not offset the additional cost of working with SS. Plus there won't ever be a big demand for a SS DR, so they will cost more due to their limited nature. Plus the monoblock and barrels will cost more. I would be surprised if you caould get one made for $12,000.

As fo rweight, they really do not weigh more than a typical bolt action of the same caliber. Yes, there are light bolt action big bores out there, but they are not typical. You can also make a double rifle light, just that folks don't want them because of the recoil. So weight is not an issue if you are willing to put up with th eadditional recoil and are willing to have one built to the light weight.

And for utter reliabilty in wet, muddy conditions, the bolt action will be more reliable in the end.

So how many guides on this board use a $12,000 rifle day in and day out that is not as reliable as $1,000 bolt action?
