A big rock, or a large animal are reflective enough. For smaller animals, the beam must be pointed exactly on target, otherwise it may not tell you the correct distance. Some range finders don't show the display clearly enough when used in bright sunlight. Also, must range finders won't be accurate if pointed towards bright light. However, under normal conditions, most range finders work fine. Other things that reduce the scanning range are rain, snow, fog, etc., but that's normal even with our eyesight.
