Spring or Fall
Posted by Alasken on Feb 25 2005
Spring and fall both have their pros and cons.
The pros of the spring season are long daylight hours (maybe not so much of a pro when you're a guide), a bear isn't rubbed is wearing a winter coat, and the claws have grown through the winter. The con for the spring is that depending on the timing, boars can be wondering around chasing sows, making things as difficult as trying to catch caribou. Neither one can be done with any amount of efficiency.
The pros and cons of the fall are shorter days and crappy weather are the cons. I've seen the weather affect the hunt a lot more in the fall. The pros are the bears are bigger and they tend to be more concentrated, feeding on salmon. Bears on a salmon stream are content with fishing. I've found it is easier to get close to bears in the fall. When I go with a brown with my bow, it'll be in the fall.
Does everyone know how to square a hide now?
