Opportunities
Posted by Mike S on Jan 28 2005
nickster,
I, like you, am on somewhat of a budget. I have lived in Anchorage since 1992 and have hunted moose since 1999. I have relied on the advise of friends and forum participants. Up until last year, I like many Alaska moose hunters packed up my pickup with four wheeler, meat trailer and gear for 2-4 days of hunting. I would then drive the 4 wheeler 10-20 miles into the backcountry and hunt. Problem #1, is toooo many hunters!!
This past fall I heeded the advise of Mr. Strahan and a couple others on the forum and concentrated my efforts closer to the road. I found an area in unit 13 off the Glenn Hwy. with a moose crossing sign. I figured what the heck, if there is enough moose activity on the highway for the state to post caution signs, there must be "Some" moose in the area. I concentrated on an area within 1/4 mile of the highway. I glassed numerous hours from dawn to dusk for 2 days prior to opening day. I counted 19 different bulls in 5 days, 4 were legal by the 50", 4 brow tine or spike/fork standards. I was lucky enough to connect with a 51" bull opening morning. My first!
I did not see another hunter within 1/2 mile of the little area I concentrated on. I did see literally hundreds of 4 wheelers, swamp buggies and 4X4's driving the trails right past me headed for the back country just like I used to do. Not a one of them stopped to look or glass the area I was in. Thank God!
I set my camp up in a highway pull-out, rode my 4 wheeler in about ¼ mile to glass and shot the bull within ½ mile of the highway. This trip cost me about $100.00. This trip would be very doable even if you did not have a 4 wheeler.
