Dem Monster AK Skwerls
Posted by mdhunter on Dec 10 2004
Howdy Fellas,

Best of luck Early, on your Big advenshure wid dem cousins and other folk!  Do yerselvs a big favur and listen to these fellers, they know Alaska like the snot on the backa all our hands.  I will add my too sents to their thots.

I live in Mareeland but have hunted muse and careeboo in Alaska the last three years, and Alaska huntin is a whole different ballgame.  For instance, here at home I hunt gray and fox skwerls with my Ruger Model 77 .22 WinMag with a 3-9x scope, and it's a deadlee combo - they pretty much head for the hills as soon as I close my truck door and start into the woodz.

But Alaska now, Alaska is a hole differnt story.  If i was lucky enuf like u to be huntin dem big Alaska buggers, I'd take my trusty ott-6 with 180 grane Barnes X, and take plenty ammo.  Like all these good fellers will tell u, keep shootin til there ain't no more movement!

Once u're sure it's ded, a hatchet, chain saw, and machete should work for field dressin, altho you'll have to tuch up dem blades ever other skwerl or so.  As for packin 'em out, the Kifaru Long Hunter pack will hold the first 2 skwerls, den ya gotta start draggin the rest or fool yer cousins inta carryin yers too.

Goodluck.  Due to the dangerous nature of this hunt it's likely to become guide-only fer us nonrezidense in da footure, so take advantage now and stock the freezur!
