*** Alternative To Rifles - Hard 12ga SLUGS? ***
Posted by Gowge on Mar 20 2004
Someone mentioned using a repeater shotgun, pump, auto, etc. as an alternative to a high power rifle for self defense against bears. I think they do have a lot of possibilities if the loaded slugs are designed at the outset for LARGE DANGEROUS GAME. ONLY one I know about that's made with this in mind, of hard cast lead, is the Dixie TERMINATOR Slug. The Dixie Slugs WEBSITE is under construction, but more information will be available soon as this page:
http://www.dixieslugs.com
This Terminator Slug is a solid, hard cast lead slug of bullet alloy, that's quinched as it drops from the mold. It has a large lube groove as well as a crimp groove for those who want to load them in brass shells. The nose of the Terminator is a 1/2" diameter flat meplat that creates a large permanent wound channel. The slug weighs 745gr and loads deliver the 'bullet' at 1200fps from a fully rifled 12ga barrel - very much like a rifle, instead of a shotgun. A smoothbore version is being developed and a 20ga version for rifled barrels & smoothbores will be available for the FALL Season as well.
Is there any consensus for the strongest possible 12ga auto or pump? Is the Benelli INERTIA Action the best auto shotugn action now? I came across some information about the Benelli that seems pretty impressive...
"On 12 February 1999, the US Army Armaments Research, Development, and Engineering Center awarded a contract to Heckler and Koch, in Sterling, Virginia for a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun, the new HK/Benelli M4 Super 90 (M4S90) for the US Armed Forces.
Designated the XM1014 Joint Services Combat Shotgun (JSCS), the shotgun was developed by Benelli Armi S.p.A. of Urbino, Italy for HK, Inc.
The M4 S90 Combat Shotgun system meets or exceeds all the performance requirements set forth in the solicitation. The M4 S90 with its 3.00-inch chamber can fire both 2.75 inch and 3.00 inch magnum ammunition....."
